Half-frame
The Pentax 17 utilises the half-size format, which allows for two 17mm x 24mm images to be captured within a single 35mm-format frame (24x36mm). It also incorporates a horizontal film advance mechanism, yet takes vertical-format pictures when held in the standard orientation.

Manual film photography
The 17 has a manual film winding mechanism akin to those found in Pentax SLR film cameras. The film advance lever enables the user to feel and hear the motion of winding the film after each shutter release. Its straightforward loading system is engineered to mitigate film-loading errors, especially for those new to film photography. Additionally, it features other mechanisms common to film cameras, such as manual film rewinding using the rewind crank, exposure compensation via the dedicated dial, and ISO sensitivity adjustment through the ISO dial.

Fixed 25mm F3.5 lens
The Pentax 17 film camera features a newly developed 25mm F3.5 fixed-focal lens (equivalent to a 37mm lens in the 35mm format) and a wide selection of ISO film speeds (50, 100, 125, 160, 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200) to ensure bright photographs at a wide focal length, even in low light. The lens optics have been designed to perfectly fit the half-size format, with the angle of view and focal length selected to make casual, everyday picture-taking simple and flawless. It is also treated with an HD (high-definition) multi-layer coating to optimise the clarity and sharpness of half-size pictures.

Zone-focus system
A zone-focus system allows for a range of focus distances, from close-ups to landscapes, divided into six distinct focus zones, each indicated by a mark on the lens. To set the camera's focus, the user simply selects the mark that corresponds to the distance of the subject. In the Macro focus zone, users can capture photos from as close as 25 centimetres away. The included hand strap serves as a helpful tool, enabling the user to more accurately measure the distance to the subject.

Bright OVF
The film camera's optical viewfinder includes an Albada-type bright frame finder. It also features a close-up visual field compensation frame, which assists in more accurately composing close-up shots. Additionally, you can directly view the zone marks through the viewfinder.

7 shooting modes
The camera can automatically adjust its exposure settings based on the lighting data collected by its metering sensor. It features a Full Auto mode, as well as six other shooting modes to give you the best image in each scenario. These include Slow-speed sync, particularly useful for twilight photography, and Bulb, handy for capturing nightscapes or fireworks. Furthermore, the Pentax 17 features an independent exposure compensation dial, enabling the quick adjustment of exposure level to suit different subjects or to express your creative vision.

Meticulous design
The Pentax 17’s body has a classic design, hinting at the traditional look of film cameras. The top and bottom covers are made of a solid but lightweight magnesium alloy to optimise the camera body’s durability. The camera also features a note holder on the back cover, a 40.5mm filter mounting thread, and three strap lugs to accommodate horizontal and vertical camera suspensions depending on shooting style.
